Bird breeding software: what to look for — Birds Evolution

Bird breeding software replaces notebooks and spreadsheets for your birds, pairs, clutches and pedigrees. This checklist covers the criteria that matter in daily aviary work. For each one, it states what Birds Evolution offers today, so you can ask any application the same questions.

Open or install Birds Evolution

Does it work in the aviary without internet?

Bird rooms and aviaries often have a weak connection or none at all. Check that the application keeps your records on the device and lets you keep working offline. Birds Evolution is offline-first: your data is stored locally and synchronises between your devices when you reconnect.

Pedigrees and inbreeding

Check how many generations the pedigree can show and print, and whether inbreeding is calculated from the recorded parents. Birds Evolution displays and prints pedigrees on up to 999 generations and calculates inbreeding with the common ancestors. Any pedigree calculation is only as reliable as the parents you record.

Several devices, one set of records

Many breeders take notes on a phone in the aviary and review them on a computer. Check which platforms are supported and how records move between them. Birds Evolution runs on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, and in a web browser, and synchronises your records between your devices.

Clutches, eggs and breeding dates

A season is followed egg by egg: laying, fertility check, expected hatching, ringing and weaning. Check that these dates are calculated for each species. Birds Evolution tracks pairs, clutches and each egg until hatching, and calculates the expected dates from species reference values.

Genetics and colour mutations

If you breed colour mutations, check whether the software predicts the possible offspring of a pairing for your species. Birds Evolution predicts offspring mutations, shows the results separately for males and females, and lets you configure the mutations of each species.

Exports: your data stays yours

Your records represent years of work, so check that you can take them with you in an open format. Birds Evolution exports part of your data as CSV for Microsoft Excel or any spreadsheet, all of it as JSON, and lets you download a local backup of your database.

Privacy and backups

Check where your data is kept, whether it is backed up and what is shown publicly. Birds Evolution keeps daily server backups. Your public breeder page is optional and shows only what you choose to publish, never your exact address.

A community, not only a tool

Software that connects you with other breeders helps you find birds of the species you keep and exchange experience. Birds Evolution members can publish a breeder page with the species they breed and the birds they have available, and appear in the breeder directory and on the members map.

Questions and answers

Which feature matters most in bird breeding software?

It depends on how you breed. Breeders who record in the aviary need reliable offline use, breeders of colour mutations need genetics, and breeders who exchange birds need complete pedigrees. Use the checklist on this page to weigh each criterion.

Can I try Birds Evolution before choosing?

Yes. The web version can be tried for free without creating an account, and you can start with the free plan before choosing a yearly subscription.

Can I leave with my data?

Yes. You can export part of your data as CSV and all of it as JSON at any time.
